Shackles look simple — a U-shaped body and a removable pin — but the specific type, pin style, material, and rating you choose all matter once real load and real seawater are involved. Here's what to actually think about before you order.
Bow shackles vs D (dee) shackles
Bow shackles have a wider, more rounded body, which lets them accept multiple sling legs or load from an angle without side-loading the pin — a common choice for general lifting and rigging where the pull direction isn't perfectly straight. D-shackles (sometimes called chain shackles) have a narrower, more rectangular body built for higher-strength inline pulls, where the load stays aligned with the shackle's long axis.
Screw pin, bolt-type, or safety pin
Screw pin shackles are quick to connect and disconnect by hand, which makes them convenient for temporary rigging — but the pin can work loose under vibration or repeated motion if it isn't checked. Bolt-type shackles use a nut and cotter pin (or a safety pin variant) to positively lock the pin in place, which is why they're the preferred choice for permanent, safety-critical, or vibration-prone lifting applications where a pin backing out simply isn't an option.
Material and finish
Hot-dip galvanized carbon steel is the standard, cost-effective choice for general marine and rigging use, offering solid corrosion protection for most environments. Sizing and working load
- Always size the shackle to the rated working load of the application — never estimate.
- Match the pin diameter to the rope, chain, or sling it will carry; an undersized pin creates a pinch point and uneven load bearing.
- Check the size and rating markings forged into the shackle body before installation.
- Inspect for wear, deformation, or thread damage on the pin before every use, and retire any shackle that shows cracking or significant wear.
